The Brandy Alexander is a cocktail consisting of cognac (brandy), creme de cacao, and cream. It's a member of a family of sweet, creamy drinks that enjoyed great popularity in the 1970s.

Original Recipe

The Brandy Alexander is based on an earlier cocktail called an Alexander, earliest reference to which is 1915, which consisted of gin, creme de cacao, and cream.

  • Shake in iced cocktail shaker & strain
  • 3/4 oz cream (2 cl, 3/16 gills)
  • 3/4 oz brandy (2 cl, 3/16 gills)
  • 3/4 oz dark creme de cacao (2 cl, 3/16 gills)
  • Add nutmeg sprinkle
  • Serve in a cocktail glass


Dick Bradsell

  • 35ml Cognac
  • 12.5ml Creme de Cacao (Light)
  • 12.5ml Creme de Cacao (Dark)
  • 20ml Cream/ Milk (Half n' Half)

Shake with ice, and then strain into a cocktail glass. Sprinkle with grated nutmeg.
