Created by Earnest Hemingway at Harry's Bar, Venice. Named for Sir Bernard Law Montgomery of the British Eighth Army, the drink's proportions of gin to vermouth (at 15 to 1) are said to represent the General's requirement for outnumbering the enemy prior to engagement.

15 parts Gin to 1 part Dry Vermouth, i.e 3 3/4oz Gin, 1/4oz Dry Vermouth, shaken or stirred and served "up" in a cocktail glass.
