Whiskey, or whisky, refers to a broad category of alcoholic beverages that are distilled from fermented grain mash and aged in wooden casks, generally oak. Different grains are used for different varieties, including: barley, malted barley, rye, malted rye, wheat, and maize (corn).

The most common types of whisk(e)y include:

  • Bourbon whiskey - Made with between 51% and 79% corn (maize).
  • Canadian whisky - Aged at least three years in a barrel and a blend of multi-grain whisk.
  • Irish whiskey - Generally a three-times distilled spirit primarily made with malted barley.
  • Scotch whisky - Usually a twice-distilled spirit made primarily with peat-smoked malted barley.
  • Tennessee whiskey - The same as Bourbon, but filtered through sugar maple charcoal, giving it a unique flavor and aroma.
