The Whiskey Sour is a Cocktail consisting of Whiskey, Fresh Lemon Juice, and Sugar.


Earliest Printed Recipe

From Jerry Thomas' (1862)

  • Take 1 large tea-spoonful of powdered white sugar,
  • dissolved in a little Seltzer or Apollinaris water.
  • The juice of half a small lemon.
  • 1 wine-glass of Bourbon or rye whiskey.

Fill the glass full of shaved ice, shake up and strain into a claret glass. Ornament with berries.

  • 50ml Bourbon Whiskey
  • 25ml Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 15ml Sugar Syrup
  • 15ml Eggwhite

Shake with ice, and then strain into Ice-filled Rocks Glass. Garnish with a Lemon Slice.


Dick Bradsell's Recipe.

  • 50ml Bourbon Whisky,
  • 30ml Fresh Lemon Juice,
  • 15ml Gomme Syrup,
  • 2 dashes of Angostura Bitters,
  • Eggwhite.

Shake with ice, and then strain into Ice-filled Rocks Glass. Garnish with a Lemon Slice, and a maraschino cherry.


George Sinclair's Recipe.

  • 50ml Bourbon Whisky,
  • 30ml Fresh Lemon Juice,
  • 15ml Gomme Syrup,
  • 2 dashes of Grapefruit Bitters,
  • Eggwhite.

Shake with ice, and then strain into Ice-filled Rocks Glass. Garnish with a Lemon Twist.
