Whiskey, or whisky, refers to a broad category of alcoholic beverages that are distilled from fermented grain mash and aged in wooden casks, generally oak. Different grains are used for different varieties, including: barley, malted barley, rye, malted rye, wheat, and maize (corn).
The most common types of whisk(e)y include:
- Bourbon whiskey - Made with between 51% and 79% corn (maize).
- Canadian whiskey - Aged at least three years in a barrel and a blend of multi-grain whisk.
- Irish whiskey - Generally a three-times distilled spirit primarily made with malted barley.
- Scotch whisky - Usually a twice-distilled spirit made primarily with peat-smoked malted barley.
