"Brandy-smash is made with brandy, mint, and ice."

The Cook's Guide, and Housekeepers and Butler's Assistant, by Charles Elmé Francatelli, 1863

"BRANDY-SMASH. Put three slices of lemon in a tumbler with a few slices of pine-apple, add a dessert-spoonful of sifted sugar; fill up with shaved Wenham Lake ice, or with any other clean ice; add a wineglass of brandy; mix, and devour devoutly."

Recipes

  • 4 fresh mint sprigs
  • 1 tsp superfine sugar
  • 1 oz club soda
  • 2 1/2 oz brandy
  • 1 slice orange
  • 1 maraschino cherry

In an old-fashioned glass, muddle the mint sprigs lightly with the sugar and club soda. Fill the glass with ice cubes. Add the brandy. Stir well and garnish with the orange slice and the cherry.
