Chartreuse is a French herbal liqueur. The liqueur is manufactured under the supervision of Carthusian monks of the Grande Chartreuse monastery.
It comes in two main varieties:
- Green Chartreuse, which is naturally colored green with chlorophyll, is flavored with extracts from 130 plants, and has an alcohol content of 55%.
- Yellow Chartreuse is milder and sweeter, naturally colored yellow with saffron, and is 40% or 43% alcohol.
There are other rarer and more specialized varieties of this liqueur available.
