Also known as "Italian vermouth," sweet vermouth is a sweet red wine fortified with various botanicals.
The term "Italian vermouth" originates from the time when the sweet version of this fortified wine was produced only in Italy. Nowadays dry vermouth is also produced in Italy.
Sweet vermouth is an ingredient in the classic Manhattan Cocktail. One of the premier brands of dry vermouth is Martini & Rossi.
