Fizzes are generally made with liquor, citrus fruit juices and sugar with ice and the addition of seltzer or club soda (although other carbonated beverages can be used).
According to Victor Bergeron in his 1972 tome Trader Vic's Bartender's Guide, "The Fizz is an early-morning drink with a definite purpose -- a panacea for hang-overs."
